A bear cub, recovering from anesthesia, is held with thick protective gloves with its chin resting on the glove's fingertips. The bears mouth is slightly ajar, and its pink gums can be seen on its bottom lip.On the afternoon of April 20, two male Black Bears cubs were admitted to the Wildlife Center from Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Their rescuer reached out to the Center’s Front Desk Staff after spotting them “running frantically in the road” and appearing distressed. With the help of Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources staff and Pittsylvania County Animal Control Officers, the cubs were safely contained. After no adult bears were located in the area at the time of rescue, they were transported to the Center for care.

During their intake examination, the rehabilitation and veterinary teams found both cubs to be mildly dehydrated and slightly thin. Aside from carrying a moderate-heavy level of ticks, they were in good health. Cub #24-0744, the smaller of the two, weighed in at 1.90 kg on admission. Black Bear cub #24-0745 weighed in at 2.12 kg.

After receiving fluids to treat their dehydration and topical anti-parasitic medication, the rehabilitation staff placed the cubs together in a Zinger crate in LMI. In this space, away and quarantined from the other Black Bear cubs of 2024, they are being offered both bottles and mush bowls three times per day. Pending the results from blood and fecal tests, rehabilitation staff plan to slowly introduce the new cubs to the others in the full LMI enclosure under close observation.
