Black Bear #13-0646, the ninth Black Bear admitted to the Wildlife Center in 2013, was admitted on April 30. The cub was found several days ago by a family in Floyd County; a Department of Game & Inland Fisheries officer transported the small male cub to the Wildlife Center.

Dr. Rich Sim, the Center’s veterinary fellow, performed a physical examination on the cub, and found the bear to be healthy. The cub currently weighs in at 1.81 kgs – about the same weight as the Center’s smallest cub currently in care [#13-0425].

The cub will be housed in the Center’s holding room for the next few days, while the Center staff establish a dietary routine for the cub. The staff will bottle-feed the cub at first, though will also offer formula from a bowl – currently the six other cubs in care are drinking formula from a bowl several times a day. Once the bear is eating well and has medical clearance from additional diagnostic tests [fecal examination], it will be moved outside and introduced to the six other bear cubs.

At the Wildlife Center, we treat to release. Your donation will help support the Center’s life-saving work with this young cub … and with thousands of wild animals in need.
