When people think of the Wildlife Center, they often picture the thousands of injured, sick, or orphaned animals the Center treats and rehabilitates each year. And that work is absolutely vital. But there’s another equally important — if not even more important — part of our mission: teaching the world!
The Wildlife Center is not just a hospital — it’s a teaching hospital. Each year, the Center welcomes students from across the globe to learn from our dedicated team of wildlife veterinarians, rehabilitators, and educators. These students come to gain hands-on experience in the field of wildlife medicine, preparing to become the next generation of wildlife professionals.
So far this year, the Center has hosted 48 students representing 20 U.S. states and three other countries: Peru, Brazil, and Mexico. Each student brings a unique background and a distinct set of goals, and each one is immersed in the daily work of the Center, learning everything from capture and restraint techniques to medical treatment, surgical procedures, animal husbandry, enrichment, and more.
What sets the Wildlife Center's teaching program apart is how it bridges the gap between veterinary medicine and wildlife care. While many veterinary programs focus on domestic animals or livestock, few offer direct experience with native wildlife. Student rotations at the Center provide that critical opportunity, and help prepare students to bring wildlife expertise into a wide range of careers in conservation and veterinary medicine.
