It’s time to look back on 2025! Check our blog between Christmas and New Year’s for a variety of stories and memories of 2025 from the staff of the Wildlife Center of Virginia.
When I think back on 2025 at the Wildlife Center, I’m reminded of just how nonstop and overwhelming life at the Center can be. From my office, I can hear phones that rarely stop ringing, patients arrive faster than we can count, and for my coworkers in the hospital, the days often blur together in a whirlwind of exams, treatments, and tough decisions. Right in the middle of it all, though, came one of my favorite moments of the year—our first “Spirit Week.”
Spirit Week was an idea we came up with to bring enjoyment and connection into our busy workdays. From October 27 to October 31, each day had a different theme, and staff were encouraged to participate with costumes, snacks, and light-hearted creativity. The result was immediate—somehow, the Center felt like a brighter, more connected community.
The week began with “Rainbow Spirit Day,” with staff arriving dressed in vibrant colors. Next was “Bird Nerd Day”—absolutely a staff favorite—which brought out everyone's favorite bird t-shirts, accessories, and field guides. Even our hospital rounds, when we go over patient cases, felt more upbeat thanks to the daily treats waiting for us.
The highlight of the whole week for me was the spooky-themed potluck on Halloween. Costumes, crockpots, dips, desserts, and smiling faces everywhere—what more could you want? For a little while, the building felt lighter and warmer as everyone swapped stories, complimented each other’s spooky outfits, and simply enjoyed being together.
Spirit Week 2025 wasn’t just a week of dress-up and snacks; it was a great reminder of how much heart (and humor!) lives in this place. It reminded me how important these small pockets of joy are in this work. They knit us closer, recharge us, and help carry us through the harder days at the Center. I’m already looking forward to the fun, creativity, and surprises Spirit Week 2026 will bring.
