Help Name our Newest Animal Ambassador!

We are thrilled to introduce the newest member of our ambassador team—Virginia Opossum #25-2775!

This young opossum was found injured at a construction site in Harrisonburg, Virginia. On admission, the Center's veterinary team examined her and found that she had multiple puncture wounds and fractures on the right side of her face, which were likely the result of a predator attack. While most of the wounds healed with time, her right eye was too damaged to repair and had to be surgically removed. With only one eye, the opossum was deemed non-releasable—but she came to the Center at just the right time, because we were hoping to add a new opossum to our team!

In the weeks following her recovery, the outreach team began assessing the opossum as a potential education ambassador. It quickly became clear that she was an excellent fit.

“It's been incredible to watch this opossum come into her own and become more confident around her human co-workers," Outreach Coordinator Alison shared. “Although she was hesitant to interact with us during the first few days in our care, she's blossomed into an inquisitive, spirited individual. She still has some training ahead of her before she's ready for public appearances, but I can’t wait to introduce her to the world — she has so much to teach, and I know she’s going to inspire a lot of people!”

On August 11, the opossum was officially added to the Center's permits and joined the ambassador team. Now she just needs a name—and you have the opportunity to name her! The Center is auctioning off her naming rights at their Annual Gala this Saturday, August 23. You don't need to be at the Gala in person to bid—you can submit an absentee bid!
