The Wildlife Center staff recently received a report on a former Bald Eagle patient – Bald Eagle #11-1234, otherwise known as KS!
KS was a banded hatch-year eagle who was admitted in June 2011 after she was found on the ground, unable to fly, in Virginia Beach. The young eagle was healthy, just in need of more time to grow and learn how to properly fly prior to being released. KS was a contemporary of the Norfolk Botanical Garden eaglets, known to Eagle Cam fans as “The Rock Stars”, and she shared enclosure space with the famous trio throughout the summer of 2011. KS was released with Bald Eagle NX in August 2011 at Berkeley Plantation.
In 2014, KS was photographed and identified by her letter band at the Honey Bee Golf Course in Virginia Beach. Five years later, a Bald Eagle nest monitor identified KS once again, this time as a breeding female at a nest in Chesapeake. KS has produced two chicks each year since 2018 – and this year reportedly has three chicks.
It’s always encouraging for Wildlife Center staff to hear of success cases – and know that a former patient has been living a wild life, for more than a decade, after being given second chance.
