Ever since Oscar the Eastern Hog-nosed Snake joined our ambassador staff in 2015, we’ve hosted Oscar’s Oscar Awards each year. Oscar was named for the impressive acting abilities of the hog-nosed snake species and the dramatic “death scenes” that they often employ to evade predators — truly Oscar-worthy! This year, Oscar is delighted to announce the following winners to his fellow education ambassadors:
Best Picture: Artist Amy Shawley offers several drawing and painting workshops at the Center each year; Wilson was our most popular model for the 2019 workshops!
Best Makeup & Hairstyling: Sheldon the Woodland Box Turtle rejoined the Center in 2019, this time, as an education ambassador! Shelton was initially treated as a patient in 2013 when she was discovered with her shell entirely painted in bright fingernail polishes and paint. We definitely prefer her "natural" shell-style now!
Best Animated Short Film: Office administrator Kayla created a gif of Rowan the Red-tailed Hawk, our newest education ambassador. Rowan made his debut at the Center’s annual Gala in November 2019.
Best Sound Mixing: Hudson the Gyrfalcon is one of our most talkative ambassadors; he definitely has a variety of vocalizations for different situations. His human co-workers are often advised to wear earplugs when working with him!
Best Supporting Actress: Rosalie the Red-tailed Hawk made quite her screen debut in 2019; she appeared in the introduction of Untamed, the Center’s television series co-produced with Virginia Public Media. Her on-screen appearances will continue; we have the same intro for Season 2 of Untamed, which will start airing on May 21!
Best Supporting Actor: It’s no surprise that the two hog-nosed snakes at the Center are the best actors around; Elliott was named for actor Sam Elliott and joined the team in early 2019.
And, of course, the snake himself … Best Actor goes to Oscar, as always!
