Join us for a Bald Eagle release at Machicomoco State Park on Thursday, August 13!

Bald Eagle #26-2518 was admitted to the Center on June 25 after being found grounded on the side of the road in Middlesex County. On admission, the eagle was in critical condition. The veterinary team found blood coming from the bird’s mouth, as well as abrasions, soft tissue trauma, and paresis in its left foot. Based on the injuries, the team suspects that the eagle had been struck by a vehicle. Bloodwork also revealed high levels of lead in the eagle’s system. It’s possible that the lead poisoning weakened the eagle, making it more vulnerable to being struck.

Veterinary staff immediately began treatment with chelation therapy to remove the lead, along with anti-inflammatories and supportive care. After nearly one month of treatment, including multiple rounds of chelation therapy and repeated blood testing, the lead had been successfully removed from the eagle's system, and the bird's injuries had healed. The rehabilitation team then began daily flight conditioning to rebuild the eagle's strength and endurance. On August 7, the veterinary team determined the eagle had made a full recovery and officially cleared the bird for release.
