Two of the Center's Bald Eagle patients are ready for release—and you're invited to witness their return to the wild! The eagles will be released together on Thursday, September 11, at 1:00 p.m. at the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Cat Point Creek Unit.
This release is free and open to the public, and will take place rain or shine—though it may be delayed or canceled if thunderstorms with lightning threaten visitor safety. Attendees are asked to RSVP with their name and the number of people in their party through this webform.
Directions: Use the address 2570 Newland Rd, Warsaw, VA 22572 for GPS navigation. The release will take place at the Cat Point Creek Lodge; staff will be available to assist with parking.
The first eagle, Bald Eagle #25-1600, was admitted on May 21 after being found grounded and unable to stand in Richmond County. Radiographs revealed that the eagle had a fractured coracoid—a shoulder bone critical for flight.
The second eagle, Bald Eagle #25-1964, arrived on June 2 from Hanover County. Though no injuries were found during its exam, the bird was thin and weak, indicating it may have been ill or fledged from the nest early.
After receiving weeks of supportive care, both eagles were deemed healthy and placed together in a large outdoor enclosure for daily rehabilitation. By August, they began flight conditioning to build strength and stamina. On September 6, both birds were officially cleared for release!
