After three weeks of treatment and rehabilitation, Bald Eagle #25-4048 is ready to return to the wild! The public is invited to join us for the release on Thursday, November 20, at 1:00 p.m. at Lake Anna State Park.
This adult Bald Eagle was rescued on October 27 after animal control officers found her grounded at a landfill in Spotsylvania County. The eagle was first taken to Chickahominy Wildlife, and then transferred to the Wildlife Center for further care. On admission, she was moderately dehydrated and had minor abrasions on both feet. Bloodwork revealed the bird had subclinical levels of lead in her system, a significant—and preventable––issue for Bald Eagles.
After one round of chelation therapy, the lead was successfully removed from the eagle's system, and the bird's health steadily improved. By mid-November, rehabilitation staff started exercising the eagle in a large flight pen to rebuild her strength and stamina. On November 18, the eagle was cleared for release!
Join us on Thursday for the release! Before returning the eagle to the wild, Wildlife Center staff will do a brief educational program about her rehabilitation and the Center’s work with Bald Eagles. The event is free and open to the public, but attendees are encouraged to RSVP with their name and party size using this webform.
