Wildlife Center front desk staff coordinated a successful rescue with a local falconer for a Bald Eagle that was found injured and unable to fly in Luray, VA on September 20, 2023.
On admission, the eagle – a juvenile female – was in a thin body condition. Several fractures to the bird’s left wing were found with extensive bruising and open wounds, along with injuries to her right eye. In-house testing revealed the eagle also had elevated blood lead levels. Even at low levels, lead toxicosis can cause serious neurologic issues.
During the next two months, Bald Eagle #23-3492 had several surgeries to repair her fractured wing. In November, she was moved to an outdoor flight pen to slowly regain her physical strength and stamina. Following months of recovery and rehabilitation, the eagle has been cleared for release back into the wild.

The release will take place rain or shine, unless thunderstorms with lightning threaten visitor safety.
6/6/24 update: We're still planning on releasing Bald Eagle #23-3492 today at 1:00 pm at Seven Bends State Park -- but stay tuned to Facebook and email for any updates. Rain is in the forecast -- which is okay for the eagle! Whether back in the wild, or in an outdoor flight pen at the Center, the bird will be outside in the elements, just like other wild eagles. Pack your rain jacket! If it's raining heavily, we may delay the release by 15-30 minutes until we get a break in the rain. If it's storming, we will watch the radar and will delay the release until it's safe for humans to be out in the elements.
