Wildlife Care Academy

The Wildlife Care Academy provides excellent academic programs in the fields of wildlife rehabilitation, medicine, and conservation.


What is the Wildlife Care Academy?
The Wildlife Center of Virginia established the Wildlife Care Academy to provide comprehensive instruction on a wide array of topics, including wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife medicine and diagnostics, capture and restraint, as well as related disciplines regarding conservation education and organization management.  According the Wildlife Center President Ed Clark, “The mission of the Wildlife Center is ‘...teaching the world the world to care about and care for wildlife and the environment’; through the Wildlife Care Academy, we will be teaching more people to care for wildlife than ever before, including a full range of wildlife and veterinary professionals, and those who support their work.”

What class formats are offered?

  • Online Classes: Interactive yet convenient!  Synchronous classes taught online through Blackboard Collaborate allow for an engaging learning experience with a live instructor while in the comfort of your home. Click here for our 2017 Fall Online Class Calendar.
  • “On The Road” Classes: We bring an instructor to you! Classes are taught in a traditional classroom setting, in various venues across Virginia and elsewhere.  Select a half day or full day of courses from the Wildlife Care Academy Course Catalog. Contact academy@wildlifecenter.org if you are interested in hosting an on-the-road seminar! 
  • On-demand Classes: Coming soon! These classes will be available online and can be accessed 24 hours per day.

What types of classes are offered?
The Academy offers both online and traditional classroom courses related to the care of wildlife, ranging from basic introductory sessions to advanced wildlife medicine and diagnostics. There will also be practical, hands-on training courses, taught in various venues across Virginia and elsewhere, to impart the specific skills and techniques required for successful wildlife rehabilitation. Who can attend classes?
The Wildlife Center offers a variety of training classes at various levels; some are geared toward wildlife enthusiasts, while others are for those who will be going through the wildlife rehabilitator permitting process.  Classes are designed for wildlife rehabilitators, animal control officers, conservation police, biologists, licensed veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and others who care for or care about wildlife. Advanced level classes may have pre-requisites. Please note that while there is no age-requirement to attend classes, classes are designed for the adult learner.

Can I earn continuing education credits?
All classes and workshops which are related to the treatment or care of wildlife meet the educational requirements of The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for obtaining and renewing wildlife rehabilitation permits. Certificates of completion will be provided within seven days after the end of each course.

How can I register?
Check the class schedule and follow the links provided to complete a registration form for the class(es) that you would like to attend. Then proceed to online payment to complete your registration. Pre-payment is required; all registrations are final, non-transferable, and refunds are not available. Registration and payment processes closes 48 hours before class starts.

Once you register for an online class, you will receive an email confirmation. On the day of class, you will receive a class manual and class sign-in link via email. Please email academy@wildlifecenter.org with any questions.
